SURROGATE PARENTS WANTED

The Lakewood City school district is seeking volunteer surrogate
parents to represent students with disabilities whose parents are
unknown or unavailable, and/or are wards of the state. Children with
disabilities succeed when parents are involved and informed, and can
assure that the student will receive needed educational services. When
students don’t have their own parents or a legal guardian to
represent them, school districts must appoint a surrogate parent.

The surrogate parent represents the child’s special educational
interests in the same manner as a natural parent. He or she needs to
understand the child’s disability and unique educational needs.
The surrogate parent provides permission for certain special education
procedures, reviews the child’s assessment/evaluation data, and
gives permission for educational placement. A surrogate parent takes
part in school meetings in which the student’s individualized
education program (IEP) is developed, reviewed and modified, and is
involved in the child’s ongoing educational process.

A one-day “Surrogate Parent Training Program” will be
provided by the state. For information about becoming a volunteer,
contact Dr. Kate A. Foley, Director of Student Services at 216-529-4213.
