internal antagonist — secular humanists. Starting in the mid-1980s,
the 'dogmatic' humanist commitment to rationalism came under
increasing attack by UU clergy, conference speakers, and letter
writers to the Association journal, World. For their part, humanists
denounced the new spirituality as regressive, a backward slide to
superstition. The humanism-spirituality conflict was joined."
